Introductions

The National Institute for Nigerian Languages (NINLAN), Aba, is a Federal Government owned tertiary Institution set up by Decree 117 of December, 1993, now Act CAP N50, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN) 2004, for research, teaching, documentation and co-ordination of Nigerian Language studies.  It is an Inter-university centre under the ambit of the National Universities Commission (NUC) and a unique and specialized tertiary educational Institution that runs a range of programmes that no single Institution can handle.

The Institute currently runs three major academic programmes.  The programmes, Admission requirements and duration are as shown below:

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES, ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND DURATION:

The N.C.E programme in NINLAN is a combined honours programme in a Nigerian language and any other subject.  The Nigerian Language option include Efik, Fulfulde, Hausa, Ibibio, Igbo, Kanuri, Tiv, Urhobo and Yoruba etc.

A Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSSC/WASSC/NECO/NABTEB or G.C.E O’Level) with credit passes in four (4) subjects, including English Language, at not more than two sittings, two of the credits should be relevant to the course the candidate wishes to offer.  A pass in Mathematics may, however be required OR a Grade II Teachers Certificate (TC II) with credit or merit in four (4) subjects, at two sittings, two of which must be relevant to the course the candidate wishes to offer.  Credit/Merit in English Language and pass in Mathematics may be required.  Remedial programme is available for candidates who do not have the minimum admission requirements.

The duration of the N.C.E is three (3) academic sessions (i.e, 6 semesters) for full-time studies and four (4) academic sessions (i.e, 8 semesters) for the part-time programme.

The Institute runs Sub-Degree/Diploma Programme in Nigerian Languages, Communication studies, Education, Linguistics, Library and Information Science, Translation Studies, French, etc leading to the award of DIPLOMA.

Candidates applying for the Sub-Degree/Diploma programme should posses at least four (4) O’ level credits pass in relevant subjects including English Language and any Nigerian Language.

The duration of the Sub-Degree/Diploma is two (2) academic sessions (i.e 4 semesters) for full-time studies and three (3) academic sessions (i.e 6 semesters) for part-time programme.

POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA PROGRAMME

The Institute runs Postgraduate diploma courses in Education (PGDE), Linguistics (PGDL), Translation Studies (PGDTS), Library and Information Science (PGDLIS), Communication Studies (PGDCOM); and 12-months Graduate conversion Programme for Graduates of disciplines other than Nigerian Languages.

Applicants for the postgraduate programme shall be holders of HND/First degree certificate from any recognized Polytechnic/University or its equivalent.

The duration of the PGD is 12 months (i.e, 2 semesters) for full-time studies, and 18 months (i.e 3 semesters) for part-time.

Admission forms are available with the sum of N3,000.00 for N.C.E and Sub-Degree/Diploma and N5,000.00 for PGD at the Admission Unit, main Campus, along Opobo-Azumini Road, Aba, or at the city Campus, 53 New Umuahia Road, Ogbor-Hill, Aba.
